October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Chesnutt Library staff members dressed in pink on October 27, 2010 in recognition of October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer, other than some types of skin cancer, that occurs in women. It is the leading cause of cancer deaths among Hispanic women and the second leading cause of cancer deaths among women who are white, black, Asian/Pacific Islander, and American Indian/Alaska Native. Several risk factors may affect the likelihood of developing breast cancer including age and individual or family history of breast cancer, among other factors. Screening methods for breast cancer include mammograms, clinical breast exams, and breast self-exams.
