2016 Bronco Kickoff Closings + Hours (8.9.2016)


Chesntt Library will be closed today, Tuesday, August 9th, all day due to Bronco Kickoff Meetings: Academic Affairs, 9a.m.-10a.m. in Seabrook; Departmental Meetings in Chesnutt in the morning and the Library Staff Meeting in Chesnutt in the afternoon.

We will also be closed on Wednesday morning, August 10th, from 7:45a.m.-1:30p.m. due to the Bronco Kickoff All-Employees Meeting from 10a.m.-12p.m. and lunch on your own from 12p.m.-1:30p.m. 

The Library will open to the public at 1:30 p.m.


Chesnutt Library Hosting NAMI Book Discussion on 7/12/16 for National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month (7.7.2016)

NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Cumberland, Harnett and Lee Counties will host its Annual Book Discussion on the book entitled Welcome to My Breakdown by Benilde Little, on July 12, 2016 from 6:00 p.m to 8:00 p.m. in the Charles W. Chesnutt Library, Third Floor Conference Room at Fayetteville State University

NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Cumberland, Harnett, and Lee Counties will host its Annual Book Discussion on Benilde Little‘s book, Welcome to My Breakdown on Tuesday July 12, 2016 from 6:00 p.m to 8:00 p.m. in the Charles W. Chesnutt Library, Third Floor Conference Room.

In 2008, the U.S. House of Representatives established July as Bebe Moore Campbell National Minority  Mental Health Awareness Month.  This observance  aims to improve access  to mental health treatment and services for multicultural  communities through increased public awareness.  Copies of the book have been provided by the organization for checkout at Chesnutt Library.

NAMI is the nation’s largest grass roots organization on mental illness, often considered the voice on mental illness.  Membership in NAMI automatically  gives membership at the local, state, and national levels.  They are a nonprofit dedicated to the improvement of the quality of life for all those whose lives are affected by brain disorders.  They do this by educating, advocating, supporting, and offering information.

Obama Administration Announces New Regulations to Strengthen Employment and Training Opportunities for Millions of Americans

The U.S. Departments of Labor and Education today made publicly available the final rules to implement the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA), an historic expansion of opportunity for the nation’s job seekers, workers and employers. The regulations deliver on need to modernize the nation’s workforce system and represent a more integrated, job-driven approach to support communities and expand job growth.

The rules reflect input from stakeholders including employers and community leaders and details what the goals of a modern, agile and effective workforce should be and how partners can work to achieve those goals. These rules aim to spur growth in local and regional economies; streamline and improve the coordination of employment and training services across federal agencies; and strengthen collaboration between the federal government  employers, states, and municipalities. The WIOA Final Rules include reforms that will affect more than a dozen programs receiving $10 billion in annual training and education funding and programs that serve approximately 20 million Americans each year.

President Obama signed WIOA on July 22, 2014, after it received bipartisan Congressional support. The law provides a long-term vision for American job growth and builds on previous milestones.

“Together with our partners and stakeholders, we’re carrying out the vision of revitalizing and transforming the public workforce system to reflect the realities of the 21st century economy,” said U.S. Secretary of Labor Thomas E. Perez. “Today, we have a stronger foundation to connect Americans of all walks of life to in-demand careers and ensure that businesses have access to the skilled talent that will help grow their business and the U.S. economy.”

“These new rules are an important step forward to improve and streamline the current workforce system and a real opportunity to meet the growing needs of workers and job seekers,” said U.S. Secretary of Education John B. King Jr. “I am especially pleased that these rules strengthen education and workforce partnerships to reinforce the importance of postsecondary education and training in promoting better jobs for students, as well as removing barriers to employment.  I am proud of the work we have done on behalf of the nation’s job-seekers and employers, representing a critical refresh of systems to support communities and encourage development.  I am appreciative of the partnership with Secretary Perez and the Department of Labor in this work to continue to provide Americans opportunities for a better tomorrow.”

In 1933 the Wagner-Peyser Act established the United States’ public workforce development system. A federal, state and local partnership, the system provides support for the ever-evolving needs of the nation and prepares our workforce for success.

The Workforce Investment Act of 1998 was a major modernization of this system – authorizing public investments in training and workforce development that suited the demands of the time. After 2003, when funding under WIA expired, funding for the core programs of the workforce system continued Appropriation laws budget actions – until the enactment of WIOA.

The new regulations strengthen accountability and transparency; increase access to work-based learning tools, such as apprenticeships; improve relationships with employers, including through sector partnerships; and foster more cohesive planning within economic regions. They also improve access to education and workforce services for individuals with significant barriers to employment – individuals with disabilities, certain veterans, disconnected youth and other populations – to help them find good work.

The final regulations  include: a joint rule, issued by the Departments of Labor and Education – in collaboration with the Departments of Health and Human Services, Agriculture and Housing and Urban Development – implementing jointly-administered state planning, performance accountability, and one-stop delivery system requirements; a Department of Labor rule implementing activities under Titles I (WIOA Adult, Dislocated Worker, Youth, Job Corps, and WIOA National Programs) and III (which amends the Wagner-Peyser Act); and three Department of Education rules implementing the requirements of Titles II (the Adult Education and Family Literacy Act) and IV (which amends the Rehabilitation Act of 1973).

The five proposed rules generated more than 2,800 public comments, representing a commendable level of engagement from the many stakeholders whose contributions inform these final regulations.

Velappan Velappan, #ChesnuttLibrarian Presented at ALA Annual Conference 2016 #ALAAC16 on 6/25/16 in Orlando, FL (6.30.2016) - Chesnutt Library, Fayetteville State UniversityMr. Velappan Velappan, Head of Access Services at Charles W. Chesnutt Library, participated in a presentation with five other librarians from other universities at the 2016 American Library Association (ALA) Annual Conference on Saturday, June 25th 2016 at 1:00PM-2:30 PM in Orlando, FL.  The theme of the presentation was “FEAST: Future & Emerging Access Services Trends” and Mr. Velappan’s particular topic was “Click It, No More Tick It: Using “Gimlet” Desk Statistics to Improve Services at the Charles W. The ALA Annual Conference & Exhibition was held in Orlando, FL from June 23 – June 28, 2016 at the Orange County Convention Center (OCCC).  The American Library Association, the oldest and largest library association in the world, holds its Annual Conference & Exhibition each summer in different places around this country.  The largest such convention in the world is attended by more than 25,000 librarians, library supporters, educators, writers, publishers, friends of libraries, trustees and special guests from all over the world.  The conference includes more than 2,000 meetings, discussion groups and programs on various topics affecting libraries and librarians.  Approximately 850 exhibiting companies feature the latest in books, online services, automation software, furniture and other materials vital to today’s libraries and librarians. ALA units display professional exhibits highlighting the various aspects of the profession.   


Meet Our Newest Staff Member: Shelton Richardson in Information Technology Services (5.18.2015)

Shelton Richardson joined Chesnutt Library’s IT Department in April as a Technical Support Technician. He is from Enfield, North Carolina, and graduated from Southeast Halifax High School. Shelton studied Computer Science at Fayetteville State University and is currently pursuing a second degree in Management Information Systems.

Prior to graduating from Fayetteville State, Shelton worked as a student employee in the School of Business and Economics 214 for ITTS as a Support Technician. He started working in Student Affairs as a student employee making sure the student center was clean, safe, and setup for various functions.

Shelton successfully gained full-time employment after graduation and accepted an administrative position with Student Affairs, which he had been working in since 2008 prior to joining Chesnutt Library. Students may recognize Shelton after having seen him around campus during various functions like homecoming week, rodeo week, and orientation. Shelton enjoy movies, video games, and technology; he is #TeamAndroid. Shelton is also a member of AITP.

Librarian Diana Amerson continued to be a vital asset to Model UN delegates at the 28th North Carolina Consortium for the International and Intercultural Education (NCCIIE) Model United Nations Conference.

Fayetteville State University (FSU) captured top honors at the 27th Annual North Carolina Consortium for International and Intercultural Education (NCCIIE) Model United Nations Conference held April 21, 2016, through April 24, 2016, at the Marriott in Greensboro, N.C. FSU swept the competition, taking home the most awards by a single university.  FSU was awarded the Overall Outstanding Delegate and the Overall Outstanding Delegation, the competition’s two highest honors.
